Why choose Scottish Highlands?
There are alot of breeds out there to raise, what are the advantages of the Highlands?
The Highlands originated from Scotland, raised in the highlands. They were known foragers, eating scrub trees and whatever they could find to munch on. They were supplemented with kelp and seaweed from the shores, which was rich in nutrients.
Highlanders are the oldest registered breed on the herd books, as well as the least genetically manipulated. They are short legged, yet full bodied. The bulls and cows at maturity weigh from 1200 to 1500 pounds, some weighing in at up to 1800 pounds. Because of the lack of genetic manipulation, the steers finish out at around 1200 pounds when they are about two years old, slightly longer than the commercial breeds, yet the taste of the meat makes the wait well worth it!
The hardy breed is known for it's docile nature, with even the bulls being laid back at maturity. The cows have a 98% unassisted birthing rate, having calves that weigh around 65-75 pounds. They are born with hair , coming out looking like little teddy bears!
Highlands come in a variety of colors, are great to look at in the field, and are a joy to care for. There is nothing more beautiful in your pasture on a windy day! |
